If you're looking for an electric truck that's just as skilled at going off-road as it is for cruising through downtown Acton, MA, choose the new GMC Hummer EV pickup. This large truck has blocky, throwback styling and fantastic off-road chops. The new Rivian R1T is also an adventure-ready electric pickup, but it's not quite as much fun to drive as the Hummer EV truck. Swanson Buick GMC has put together this comparison of the two pickups to explain why.

Capability

Off-Road Proficiency

The new GMC Hummer EV truck comes standard with all-wheel drive, an adaptive air suspension, and up to 16 inches of ground clearance that enable it to go almost anywhere. Billerica drivers will like its four-wheel-steering system, which allows it to "Crab Walk" nearly sideways around obstacles.

The new Rivian R1T also comes standard with all-wheel drive, but it only has 15 inches of ground clearance. It also lacks the ability to "Crab Walk" the way the Hummer truck can.

Cargo Bed

If you want a truck that can haul a lot of plywood or boxes in Lowell, MA, the new GMC Hummer EV pickup is a solid choice. This truck comes with a five-foot bed that can carry up to 1,300 pounds of payload. The Hummer EV's MultiPro tailgate has a step, a handhold, and several configurations that can help you stow long or awkwardly shaped pieces of cargo.

The new Rivian R1T only has a 4-foot-6-inch truck bed. It doesn't off a multifunctional tailgate.

Performance

Driving Range

You won't have to recharge the new GMC Hummer EV truck very often. Marlborough drivers will appreciate its 329-mile standard driving range.

The new Rivian R1T comes standard with a 105-kWh battery and dual-motor powertrain that enable it to travel 260 miles on a full charge. Higher-range configurations are available in the R1T, but you have to pay more to get them.

Charging Times

GM's new Ultium EV architecture allows for a charging speed of up to 350 kW (or 10 miles a minute) in the GMC Hummer truck. You can regain up to 100 miles of range in the Hummer truck's battery in just 10 minutes at a Level 3 DC fast-charging station in Nashua, NH.

Recharging the new Rivian R1T takes a little longer. Using a Level 3 DC fast-charging station, you can gain about 140 miles of range in 25 minutes.

Technology

Infotainment System

It's a breeze to run the new GMC Hummer EV truck's infotainment system while you're rolling through Acton, MA. Its 13.4-inch touchscreen has sharp graphics and an easy-to-navigate menu. Its Google-powered interface also comes with plenty of knobs, buttons, and switches on the steering wheel and center stack for simpler operation on the go. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard in the Hummer truck.

The new Rivian R1T also has an impressive-looking infotainment system, but practically all cabin functions are controlled via the touch screen, which can be distracting while driving. The R1T also lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
